Densi Crete - Ocean Pool

Densi Crete & Repeller provides total concrete protection to an ocean pool

We thought it might be a good idea to talk about a project where Densi Crete and Repeller was used, that stands out from the norm – namely the Manly Ocean Pool in South East Queensland.

Graham Dean from Aquacapture Australian was approached by the Brisbane City Council for a solution to stop concrete erosion, and to protect the surface from mould and staining. After various initial discussions, it was decided that Densi Crete would be used to protect the concrete from further damage, followed by an application of Repeller to aid in the prevention of mould and staining, while keeping the slip rating of the concrete intact.

The concrete was given a quick round of diamond grinding to remove the damaged surface, followed by an application of Densi Crete. Just 24 hours afterwards, the surface could be pressure-cleaned to remove any salt that was purged from the concrete. Repeller was then applied after the surface had dried. The total surface area treated was 600m2, and the final project costs came in well under the council’s budget, and any of the previous quotes.

The reason for this project’s success is that Densi Crete needs just 10% cement in a product to be able to form its gel, which completely waterproofs the concrete. This means that Densi Crete was the perfect product to help waterproof the project’s surfaces, as it can be used on almost any surface, and also helped to purge the surfaces of salt, which is a known cause of concrete cancer.

The subsequent coating of Repeller helped to provide the surfaces with total concrete protection that few other products can claim to be capable of.

Densi Crete & Repeller ended up providing the Brisbane City Council peace of mind that the concrete at the ocean pool would not be susceptible to further damage, and wouldn’t need to constantly maintain the aesthetic appearance of the surrounding concrete steps.

Why Densi Crete is so effective:

Densi Crete is a 100% colloidal silica, which means that:

  • it can be applied to almost any concrete product containing Portland cement.
  • it is easy to apply and can be sprayed on to existing concrete or concrete at time of pour.
  • the surface is foot traffic-able after just 1 hour of the installation.
  • It accepts coverings within 24 hours of application to existing concrete or within 14 days of application if used at time of pour.
  • is more than 21% cheaper than other waterproofing membrane methods.
